Dark ceiling: application in the interior, the basic rules (27 photos)

Recently, it is believed that experiments with apartment design are allowed only to professionals, and it would be better to adhere to the established tradition: the ceilings should be white, the walls should be light, the floor should be dark, fewer accessories, more style and compatibility. Dark ceiling in the interior is considered an unnecessary risk. His ability to visually reduce the premises, making them lower, is considered to be definitely negative. However, with proper use, it can look very, very advantageous.

When is a dark ceiling justified?

The dark color ceiling in a room can be made in several cases that fully justify its use.

  • When you need to visually reduce the height of the ceiling. There are rooms that are very elongated upwards and high - they are not comfortable in them, they resemble a box placed vertically. To avoid this effect, a dark ceiling would be an excellent solution.
  • When you need to give the room originality and expressiveness. There are cases when with a white ceiling a room will look dull and faded like a dozen others. Using dark colors will help make it more interesting.
  • When you need to emphasize the complex structure of the ceiling. If the ceiling is original, decorated with irregularities or complex niches, the use of dark colors will highlight its beauty, especially if you combine them with lighter shades.
  • When you need to disguise something on the ceiling. If pipes and communications stretch along it, if there is a turntable installed under it, if the room is poorly repaired, it is old, it is notable for unevenness of all surfaces, dark colors will hide it. It is only necessary to buy equipment in dark buildings, paint the pipes and get completely lost on the background of the ceiling.
  • When you need to create a feeling of confined space, comfort and security. Strange as it may seem, the dark-colored ceiling creates a sense of twilight, isolation and security. Sometimes it is inappropriate, for example, in the living room, but in the bedroom, bathroom or room of a teenager this effect can be very useful.
  • When you need to divide the room into zones. If the area does not allow to install a screen, partition or other floor divider, the ceiling can be a good solution. Most importantly, dark colors should be in the area where people sit, but not where they eat or sleep.
  • When you need to emphasize ceiling decorations. If the surface is decorated with stucco, it will be much better seen on a dark background than on a light one.
  • When you need to enter the ceiling in black and white design of the room. You can, of course, make it white, but a dark shade will be much more expressive and pleasant to the eye.

In any of the situations, you can choose other solutions: to use the floor for division into zones, to stretch the curtains over the bed for comfort, to highlight decorations with bright color. But sometimes making a dark stretch ceiling is the simplest and therefore the best solution.

Fundamental rules

Before you make a dark ceiling in the bedroom or a dark ceiling in the bathroom, you need to remember simple rules that allow you to do this not to the detriment of the design.

Ceiling height

It is believed that if the room has a low ceiling, this automatically means that it is better not to use dark shades at all. However, this is not entirely true.

If the room is high and narrow, you need to use warm shades that visually make it lower: brown ceiling or wood in this case will fit perfectly, and the effect can be enhanced by painting the same color on top of the wall.

If the room is low and wide, you need to use cold shades that resemble the night sky: a gray ceiling or a black ceiling in this case will work best.

Frames and Zones

If the use of dark colors causes uncertainty, you can compromise and use them only partially. With a light frame, the ceiling in a low room, which needs to be visually higher, will look good. With a dark frame, the ceiling in a high room will look good, which needs to be visually lower - in this case, you can capture some of the walls.

Wall color

To design was good, all its elements must be combined with each other. For example, the green ceiling itself looks great, but in combination with the red walls will look somewhat controversial. Therefore follows:

  • use warm or cold shades wisely - warm light colors do not mix with cold dark colors and vice versa;
  • very careful to play on contrasts - it is easy to achieve complete incompatibility, if you use not the opposite of color, but simply any at random;
  • use the color compatibility table - without it, a very rare person is able to create a complex combination that can be viewed without shuddering.

Ceiling texture

If you are going to make a ceiling in the room, you need to remember that different ceilings look different. Stretch ceiling in the interior is appropriate in cases where you need gloss and the ability to reflect - it will look best if there is a cold shade. Wooden ceiling is appropriate if you want to achieve comfort and visual reduction. Decorated with plaster or paint is suitable when you do not want any frills.

General style of the room

Dark-colored stretch ceilings are well-suited for gothic, art deco or classic.

You can use furniture of dark colors in combination with a dark ceiling and dark walls - this can also be stylish in its own way, the main thing is to think everything in advance and not get the effect of a dark basement.

The same principle is to use light-colored furniture in combination with a dark ceiling (it can be suspended ceilings or wooden, it does not matter) and walls, then it will look contrast and attract attention. If you use furniture of light colors in combination with light walls - then the room will seem spacious and low (or high, depending on the shade).

You can make the floor dark, and if the effect is too dark, put a light carpet on it.

Only careful adherence to the rules will help to result in a stylish and stylish interior, rather than a set of disparate details.

What should not do?

In addition to the rules, there are also absolute contraindications for the use of dark shades. As not stretch ceilings are appropriate everywhere, so not black will be useful everywhere. You should not do them if:

  • There are no windows in the room or they are too small - otherwise it will seem dark and gloomy or it will have to keep the electric light on all the time, which is bad for health.
  • A small child will live in the room - otherwise the baby will feel depressed and unhappy, he may even get depressed. It is caused by the fact that children are always more sensitive to the environment than adults.

Be careful with the installation if:

  • The room has a low ceiling - only cool shades will do.
  • The room is high and narrow - then you may need to expand it further.
  • The room will work or communicate with each other people, for example, this is the living room.
